Bayern Munich have backed Luis Diaz to end his six-game run without a goal or assist, with sporting director Max Eberl insisting the Colombian winger is showing signs of recovery ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League visit to Viking FK.

Diaz thought he had ended the drought in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Augsburg, only for VAR to rule out his finish. Josip Stanisic had been offside in the build-up, leaving the 29-year-old still waiting for a decisive contribution.

Eberl said the disallowed goal would have helped the former Liverpool player. “It would have done him good if it had counted,” he said. “He will get back to his best. His movement is there, he is involved and creates situations. He is moving in the right direction.”

  • Diaz has played eight matches in all competitions this season.
  • His sole goal came in Bayern’s 5-1 Bundesliga win over Stuttgart on the opening matchday.
  • Last season, his first in Munich, he produced 26 goals and 23 assists in 51 appearances.
  • Bayern are third in the Bundesliga on 11 points, two behind leaders Freiburg.
  • The German side opened their Champions League campaign by beating Bodo/Glimt 5-0.

What happens next

Bayern travel to Norway to face Viking FK on Tuesday, when Diaz will have another chance to rediscover his end product. The club’s hierarchy remain convinced his performances, rather than the recent numbers, point to an imminent turnaround.
