Bayern Munich Cool Interest in Liverpool Midfielder Florian Wirtz
Florian Wirtz is not currently a Bayern Munich transfer priority despite the German champions continuing to monitor his difficult start under Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola.
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has made clear that Bayern have no immediate need to pursue the £116 million Liverpool midfielder, even as questions grow over Wirtz’s future at Anfield. The Germany international chose Liverpool over Bayern last summer after being told he would play in the central No. 10 role.
Bayern rule out immediate move
Rummenigge said Bayern are well covered in Wirtz’s preferred area of the pitch, naming Jamal Musiala, Serge Gnabry and Ismael Saibari among the available options.
“That is not my responsibility in the first place,” Rummenigge said when asked about a possible return to Germany. “Musiala and Gnabry play in that role, while there are alternatives such as Saibari. There is no reason to sign a fourth player for the sort of fee Wirtz would likely command.
“A player has to consider every move very carefully before making it.”
He did not completely close the door on a future Bayern attempt, adding that he could not say whether circumstances might change later.
Why Wirtz selected Liverpool
Rummenigge admitted surprise at how Wirtz’s Liverpool spell has developed. He said Bayern understood that the player’s decision was heavily influenced by assurances from then-manager Arne Slot that he would operate as a No. 10, the role he had played at Bayer Leverkusen.
“Yes, honestly, I am surprised,” Rummenigge said. “We had the impression he joined Liverpool because Arne Slot had promised him the No. 10 position, which was also his role at Leverkusen. That mattered greatly in his choice. There were no major financial differences, and we respected his decision.”
What happens next for Wirtz
Wirtz scored seven goals and supplied eight assists in 49 appearances during his first Liverpool season, as the club struggled under Slot. His output has fallen further since Iraola took charge: one assist in six matches so far.
The 23-year-old’s form has brought growing scrutiny and talk of an early exit from Merseyside. Bayern are watching the situation, but their current stance is that they do not require another expensive attacking midfielder.
Liverpool’s upcoming matches could now be decisive. Wirtz needs a rapid improvement in form and influence to stabilise his position, while any continued struggle is likely to intensify speculation over whether he remains content at Anfield.
