Carrick Urges Swift Verdict on Man City Case as Appeal Delays Punishment
Michael Carrick has urged the Premier League to reach a rapid final decision on Manchester City’s financial case, saying any retrospective winners’ medals would not restore the feeling Manchester United lost in the moment.
A guilty verdict has been issued over City’s financial conduct from 2009 to 2018, but the punishment has yet to be determined after the club submitted an appeal. The unresolved process leaves open the prospect of historic titles being removed, while any eventual sporting sanction could also have implications for the current campaign.
Carrick was part of two United sides who ended league seasons behind City during the period covered by the case. Sir Alex Ferguson’s team lost the 2011-12 title on goal difference after the final day, while United were runners-up again in 2017-18 under Jose Mourinho, finishing well behind their neighbours.
Asked whether he would take a Premier League winners’ medal should City’s appeal fail and titles be reassigned, Carrick said he would wait for the process to conclude. But he made clear that a medal received years later would not replicate the achievement players chase during a title run.
He said the decisive emotion comes from winning when the competition is being played, rather than receiving recognition after the event. Carrick added that the situation had affected him personally in several ways over time.
Carrick calls for clarity
The United manager said speed was vital, with clubs needing certainty to prepare for whatever follows. He described the case as an exceptional situation at the highest level of the game, with consequences reaching far beyond the teams directly involved.
Until the appeal and sanctions process is completed, uncertainty remains over whether a potential points deduction could alter the Premier League title race, the battle for Champions League places or the relegation fight. Carrick’s message was that all parties need a firm outcome quickly so football can deal with the consequences and move forward.
