Clarence Seedorf to lead Corinthians in crucial Vitoria relegation clash
Clarence Seedorf will take charge of Corinthians for the first time when they host Vitoria next Monday, with the Brazilian giants facing an eight-match fight to avoid relegation.
The former Netherlands midfielder was appointed after Fernando Diniz was dismissed last week, but he could not prevent another damaging result before his formal start. Corinthians were beaten 4-1 by Palmeiras on Sunday, extending their league losing sequence to eight games.
Corinthians are 16th in Brazil’s top division on 32 points, level with Internacional and staying above the relegation places only because they have won more matches. The club’s immediate target under Seedorf is simple: halt the slide, collect points quickly and secure survival before planning for next season.
Seedorf backed despite long coaching break
The club had struggled to persuade several candidates to take the job before turning to Seedorf, who was consulted on with Dutch forward Memphis Depay before the appointment was completed. Seedorf’s coaching record includes spells at AC Milan, Shenzhen FC and Deportivo La Coruna, while his most recent post ended with Cameroon seven years ago.
Director of football Marcelo Paz insisted Seedorf was chosen as a leader and a winner who had been preparing to return to management next year, only to accept Corinthians’ offer early. Paz said the new coach understood the need for a pragmatic response, with victories, points and a strong finish now the priority.
“His name carries weight,” Paz said. “We saw him as a leader and a winner, someone ready to coach again. He wanted to come. He knows exactly what is required now: be practical, win matches, score points and end the year well.”
Depay has become a central figure in the criticism surrounding the crisis. The Netherlands international delivered 12 goals and 10 assists during his 2024 debut season as Corinthians won the Copa do Brasil and Supercopa do Brasil, but his return this term stands at one goal and two assists from 23 appearances.
Former Corinthians forward Craque Neto, who scored 80 times in 228 games for the club, launched a fierce attack on Depay and the board. Neto said the forward had badly harmed Corinthians despite the status he holds, and described him as the main person responsible for the current situation.
Neto also questioned the decision to bring in another Dutchman, arguing that the outside company involved in the club’s decisions was filling key roles with opportunists and would ruin Corinthians. Seedorf must now lift a squad that also includes former Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard, starting with Vitoria and the remaining survival run-in.
