Kobbie Mainoo Misses Man Utd’s Champions League Clash at Atletico Madrid
Kobbie Mainoo has not travelled for Manchester United’s Champions League trip to Atletico Madrid, forcing Michael Carrick into a midfield change for tonight’s match in Spain.

Mainoo’s absence leaves Carrick likely to turn to Carlos Baleba or Andrey Santos alongside Youri Tielemans. Both players were recruited this summer, from Brighton and Chelsea respectively, but Carrick has repeatedly selected Tielemans and Mainoo as his central pairing.
That combination has come under growing scrutiny after United’s early Premier League problems. The team have taken only six points from six fixtures, while Saturday’s draw with Tottenham did little to ease the pressure after United were outplayed before the break despite Spurs eventually being reduced to 10 players.
Tielemans has been a particular focus following a subdued start at Old Trafford. The Belgium international was frequently played through in midfield against Tottenham, with concerns growing over the lack of mobility and protection around him.
Jamie Carragher argued that Tielemans excelled at Aston Villa because Unai Emery’s side operated as a closely drilled, compact unit. He believes United have provided the opposite environment for a player whose athletic limitations need to be covered by a tight team structure.
Carragher compared the situation with Alexis Mac Allister’s difficulties at Liverpool last season, saying the Argentine improved once the side became more compact. His warning for United was clear: if the setup does not change, Tielemans could struggle to retain his place.
Gary Neville also questioned whether Tielemans and Mainoo can meet the intensity required in Premier League midfield. He stressed that both are talented individually but said their qualities have not blended effectively as a partnership.
Neville pointed to Baleba’s substitute appearance against Tottenham as evidence that United can add greater energy in the middle. He said Carrick’s squad must react quickly before a testing sequence that includes Atletico away and a league visit to Elland Road.
What happens next is immediate: United face Diego Simeone’s Atletico with Mainoo unavailable, and Carrick must decide whether Baleba or Santos can bring the physical edge and control missing from recent performances. A demanding European night offers United a chance to halt their stalled start, but another weak display would intensify the pressure on their manager.
