Como are preparing a contract extension running to 2031 for Assane Diao as they move to protect one of Serie A’s fastest-rising wide players from interest across Europe.

Como move to secure Diao

The 21-year-old winger has made a blistering start to the campaign, scoring twice in the league and adding a goal in Como’s landmark 4-1 Champions League opening victory over RB Leipzig.

  • Diao changed Como’s Serie A opener against Udinese after arriving from the bench and helping spark a comeback.
  • He has since made the right wing his own in Cesc Fabregas’ side.
  • His two-goal display in the 4-1 away win at Genoa in early September further strengthened his standing.

Fabregas praises defensive progress

Fabregas has pointed to Diao’s work without the ball as a major sign of his development. The Como coach said the Genoa performance was the youngster’s most rounded display since joining the club.

He stressed that players of Diao’s age will naturally have uneven games, but was particularly pleased by the winger’s defensive contribution. Fabregas believes Diao can become a top-level player if he continues to improve in that area.

Fitness remains the key

Diao’s current form follows a difficult spell with injury. He suffered a broken bone in his right foot in April 2025, then experienced a painful recurrence during the summer, but is now fully fit.

  • He leads Serie A for completed dribbles, recording 16 successful take-ons across five matches.
  • Alongside Nico Paz and Baturina, Diao has helped turn Como into one of the division’s most dangerous attacking teams.
  • He also started Senegal’s two matches during the latest international break, underlining his growing confidence.

What happens next

Como’s priority is to keep Diao available through a demanding sequence of domestic and European fixtures. If he stays clear of further fitness problems and maintains his contribution at both ends, he could be central to Fabregas’ attempt to deliver another top-four finish.
