Dani Carvajal has been presented as a Getafe player after signing through to the summer of 2027, with the 34-year-old insisting he has chosen competition and continuity in Madrid over a final lucrative move elsewhere.

The former Real Madrid right-back has begun life at the Coliseum following his exit from the Bernabeu. Remaining in the city where he grew up was central to the decision, while Getafe’s sporting plan also convinced him and his family.

Quick facts

  • Carvajal has joined Getafe on a contract running until summer 2027.
  • The 34-year-old says he will remain for the full season and rejects reports of a winter exit clause.
  • His release clause is set at €50 million.
  • He could play at right-back or on the right of a three-man defence.
  • Carvajal has not given up hope of further Spain call-ups.

Carvajal described the switch as a project that excites him rather than a move he will judge only once the campaign ends. He said competing is part of his character and believes his experience, style and attitude can help the squad, while accepting that targets must be earned day by day.

Getafe coach Jose Bordalas played a major role in bringing him in. Carvajal said their initial conversations were positive and praised the manager’s ability to get the maximum from his players.

The defender said he shares Bordalas’ relentless approach and expects no difficulty adapting to his demands. The coach’s high-intensity, combative setup suits Carvajal’s game, with Kiko Femenia his likely rival for the right-back berth.

Carvajal can also offer Getafe another option as a right-sided central defender if Bordalas uses a back three. That versatility is expected to be a key part of his role in the new squad.

He is reported to have accepted a pay reduction of as much as 90 per cent from his Real Madrid salary. Carvajal made clear finances were not the driving force, saying the deal is not the biggest of his career but that Getafe met the conditions he wanted.

He pointed to the club’s European ambitions and stadium as factors that made the project fit. Carvajal added that he approaches everything with total commitment, whether representing a major club or carrying out an everyday task.

Injuries over recent seasons have also shaped his thinking. He said he wanted the regular football he had been missing and the chance to put those setbacks behind him.

Carvajal remains available in spirit for Spain, believing strong performances for Getafe can keep him in the international picture. He also moved to end speculation over his contract, saying there is no special agreement allowing a January departure.

What happens next: Carvajal will compete for a starting place under Bordalas as Getafe assess whether to use him on the right flank or in the centre of their defensive unit.
