Dani Olmo has confirmed he rejected Croatia’s attempt to recruit him before the 2018 World Cup, insisting Spain was always the international team he wanted to represent.

The Barcelona attacking midfielder spoke at Poljud Stadium before Spain’s UEFA Nations League meeting with Croatia in Split. Croatia considered naturalising Olmo after his rapid rise at Dinamo Zagreb, but he chose to wait for a Spain call-up.

Quick facts

  • Croatia explored calling up Olmo before the 2018 World Cup.
  • He made his senior Spain debut against Malta in November 2019.
  • Olmo spent six seasons at Dinamo Zagreb after leaving Barcelona’s La Masia at 16.
  • He scored 34 goals in 124 matches for the Croatian club.
  • Spain previously beat Croatia 4-1 in Group A3.

“I was told about the possibility and I appreciated it,” Olmo said. “But playing for my own national side was always my dream, and thankfully I achieved that.”

He pointed to the major honours he has won with Spain, including the European Championship, World Cup and Nations League. Olmo has become a key figure for Spain through their Euro 2024 and 2026 World Cup successes.

His decision did not weaken his connection with Croatia. Olmo became a leading player during his Zagreb spell and learned the local language, building a lasting bond with the country despite choosing Spain.

Spain now head to Split looking to take maximum points and strengthen their grip on the top spot in Group A3. Their earlier 4-1 victory over Croatia gives them a clear reference point heading into the return fixture.

Croatia face the contest after a 7-0 home defeat to England, adding pressure to an already crucial Nations League night. The result will carry major consequences for both teams before the November international window.
