De Zerbi blasts Tottenham mentality after Aston Villa defeat leaves Spurs in danger

Tottenham have slipped deeper into trouble after Saturday’s 3-2 Premier League defeat to Aston Villa left them in the relegation places, still without a win from five matches. Roberto De Zerbi will now use the international break to confront what he sees as a major problem with his side’s mentality and leadership.

Villa loss extends Tottenham’s winless run

Spurs began brightly against Villa and created chances during a dominant opening spell, but again failed to turn their early control into enough goals. Once Villa struck first, Tottenham lost their grip on the contest and eventually went down by a single goal.

De Zerbi said the performance followed an increasingly damaging pattern: a strong start, missed opportunities, then a collapse when the game changes.

“I have never seen a side like us,” De Zerbi said, describing Spurs as fragile and inconsistent. He argued that a team cannot be excellent for much of a match before conceding in the manner Tottenham did against Villa.

Asked what triggered the downturn, the Spurs boss conceded he did not have a complete explanation. He said his side needed to remain tighter, stronger and more compact after failing to take their first-half openings.

De Zerbi also identified communication and authority on the pitch as urgent concerns. He believes Tottenham need stronger voices capable of organising the side when opponents gain momentum.

He said similar issues had surfaced in matches against Newcastle, Liverpool and Everton, adding that the club must find answers rather than continue to repeat the same failings.

International break brings brief reset

De Zerbi is expected to hold discussions with his players during the break as Tottenham attempt to halt a run that has rapidly put his second season under pressure.

The next assignment offers little comfort. Spurs return to league action with a trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United, where another defensive lapse or loss of control could leave them further adrift near the foot of the table.
