Memphis Depay will miss Clarence Seedorf’s first game as Corinthians coach after the forward was suspended for Monday’s relegation battle with Vitoria.
Corinthians survival fight
| Item | Figure/date | Context |
|---|---|---|
| League position | 16th, 32 points | Corinthians are level on points with Internacional in the drop-zone fight. |
| Depay suspension | Vitoria, Monday | Booked against Palmeiras after an off-the-ball incident involving Vitor Roque. |
| Matches remaining | 8 | Vasco da Gama and Mirassol follow Vitoria. |
| Seedorf contract | Until December 2027 | He replaces the dismissed Fernando Diniz. |
Depay was cautioned for reacting to Vitor Roque during last weekend’s 4-1 derby defeat by Palmeiras, leaving him banned for the new manager’s opening fixture at the Neo Quimica Arena. The Netherlands international is not expected to return until Corinthians travel to Rio de Janeiro late in October.
Rodrigo Garro and Kaio Cesar are available again after serving their own bans, providing Seedorf with two timely returns for a match Corinthians cannot afford to lose.
The club’s situation has become increasingly severe after eight consecutive defeats. Corinthians sit 16th on 32 points and need a major turnaround to reach the 45-point total generally regarded as enough to avoid relegation.
Seedorf’s appointment is a high-stakes move. His best win percentage as a coach was 53 per cent during his AC Milan spell; none of his later jobs with Shenzhen, Deportivo La Coruna or Cameroon produced a rate above 48 per cent. Corinthians now need him to better that record in the final eight matches.
Depay’s own form has added to the pressure, with one goal and three assists across 27 appearances for club and country this campaign.
After hosting Vitoria, Corinthians face fellow strugglers Vasco da Gama and Mirassol in two more decisive fixtures. Seedorf’s immediate task is clear: halt the slide before one of Brazil’s biggest clubs is pulled deeper into the battle for survival.
