Borussia Dortmund have tied Niko Kovac to a new three-year contract, with Robert and Tapalovic also committing their futures to the coaching set-up at Signal Iduna Park.

The agreement locks in the staff who have driven Dortmund’s sharp rise since taking charge in spring 2025. Kovac led BVB from a mid-table position into the Champions League places before delivering Bundesliga runners-up status in his first full season, when the club collected 73 points.

His Bundesliga record stands at 2.15 points per match from 53 games, making him Dortmund’s most successful coach by that measure.

Sport managing director Lars Ricken said the extension underlined the club’s intention to keep stability around a coach who has developed the squad and earned strong backing inside Dortmund. He added that both parties quickly reached an agreement to continue their work together.

Kovac said the team had established key foundations and a clear idea of how it wants to play. He stressed that Dortmund will not settle for last season’s progress, insisting the group see room to improve and pursue bigger targets.

Who is affected

  • Niko Kovac: The Dortmund head coach has agreed a three-year extension.
  • Robert and Tapalovic: They remain alongside Kovac as part of the coaching staff.
  • Borussia Dortmund’s squad: The players will continue under the same technical leadership as the club chase domestic and European progress.

What comes next

  1. Dortmund travel to Norway on Wednesday for their Champions League matchday two fixture against Bodo/Glimt.
  2. Kovac’s side then visit Union Berlin in Bundesliga matchday six.
  3. BVB take 13 points from their first five league matches into the next round of fixtures as they look to stay near the summit.
