Edson Alvarez denies kidnapping claims and considers legal action
West Ham United midfielder Alvarez has denied any involvement in alleged criminal activity and instructed his legal team to consider action against those spreading claims linking him to a reported kidnapping plot.
The Mexico international issued a firm public statement after reports attempted to connect him and his partner to a case allegedly involving his former partner’s father. Alvarez said there was no basis for attaching his name to events in which he had played no part.
Alvarez moves to protect his name
- Allegations circulated suggesting Alvarez was connected to a kidnapping case reportedly organised by his father-in-law.
- The West Ham player initially chose not to respond, hoping the rumours would fade without further attention.
- As the accusations escalated and began to affect his reputation, Alvarez released a lengthy statement through his official social-media accounts.
- He categorically rejected attempts to associate him with “events, conflicts or behaviour” unrelated to him.
- Alvarez challenged anyone claiming he had committed wrongdoing to submit evidence to the relevant authorities, prosecutors or courts.
- He confirmed that lawyers had been asked to assess and pursue possible legal proceedings against people making or distributing false accusations.
Midfielder rejects responsibility for third-party actions
Alvarez stressed that he cannot be held accountable for the conduct of others, including any person connected to a former relationship. He said his name would not be used to drive disputes between third parties or generate publicity.
The former Ajax midfielder also pointed to a professional career approaching 10 years in which he has largely avoided public controversy. He said his standing had been earned through work, discipline and the values of his family in Mexico.
What happens next
Alvarez is now waiting on advice from his legal representatives as he considers his response to the allegations. On the pitch, he is aiming to make an impact under West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo after returning to East London from a difficult summer World Cup campaign as Mexico captain.
Since arriving from Ajax in the summer of 2023, Alvarez has made 74 appearances for West Ham.
