Elder Scrolls Online Roadmap Update Promises Delayed Content Through 2027
ZeniMax Online Studios has reaffirmed that The Elder Scrolls Online is “here to stay,” even after a recent layoff that cut the team’s staff. In a new roadmap update shared on ESO’s official site, game director Nick Giacomini laid out what players can expect across the remainder of this year and into 2026 and 2027, while acknowledging that several highly anticipated updates have been shifted back to prioritize “quality experiences over calendar dates.”
The biggest schedule changes come from pushing major items—including the combat and class refresh and Update 52—into next year. Giacomini says the studio is aiming to keep expanding ESO rather than simply maintaining it, framing the roadmap as evidence that new content is still in the pipeline. He also pointed to ESO’s 12-year history, describing “bumps in the road” the community has faced together and emphasizing that the goal now is to grow along with players.
What’s coming in the rest of 2026
For the remainder of the current year, ESO’s next major milestone is Update 51, now scheduled to launch on September 28. This update is paired with a new challenge called The Nowhere Vault and introduces a new game system named Rumors. The update also includes a set of player experience upgrades and quality-of-life changes, including achievement pinning, customizable HUD support on keyboard platforms, hybridization, improvements to Antiquities, Transmute Stations in Cyrodiil, and additional features such as a Housing Tab Sorter, Quest Starter Language, and Eidetic Memory improvements.
Alongside Update 51, the rest of Season One is stated to continue as planned, with several additions for players who have been waiting. Live now, ESO is adding new Sheogorath story quests and the Golden Pursuit feature. In August, Whitestrake’s Mayhem runs from August 5 to August 12. A new Golden Pursuit campaign titled “Straight to the Crate” is scheduled to run from August 20 through September 17, offering players the chance to earn up to 20 free Crown Crates. ESO also plans the High Seas of Tamriel event from September 30 to October 14, and it confirms that three-sided Battlegrounds will return permanently on September 28 with Update 51.
Season Two begins on October 21, 2026, and introduces solo dungeon content. The solo dungeons listed are Moon Hunter Keep and March of Sacrifices. To mark the release, ESO says the group versions of these dungeons will be made free for all players on October 12, 2026. The roadmap also includes several other Season Two additions: the Greymoor Chapter and Markarth DLC will become free for all players on November 9, 2026; and a new Golden Pursuit is planned from November 9 to December 2 to highlight Skyrim alongside the (now available to everyone) Antiquities system.
Other confirmed Season Two features include improvements to the Tamriel Tome, such as expanded challenges for broader playstyles and a higher Tome Point rollover cap. ESO also notes Frost Atronach crate rewards will be available in the Gold Coast Bazaar, while the Witches Festival and the New Life Festival events will return as usual.
What’s coming in 2027
Looking further ahead, ESO’s next trial is named Crimson Veldt. The roadmap describes it as a boundary-pushing trial that includes mounted combat, with the team saying it needs more time to ensure the experience meets expectations. The studio is also moving Update 52 to January 2027, where it expects the Jerall Pass PvP zone and Skyrim’s Dynamic Encounters: Rimegales to arrive. Finally, the roadmap states that the next Class and Combat refresh is targeted for 2027, while the team says it is discussing interim options for classes that are still waiting for their full refresh to improve the player experience in the meantime.
