Bournemouth secured their first domestic win of the campaign with a 2-0 victory over 10-man Sunderland, climbing clear of the relegation zone as Evanilson starred with an assist and a goal.

Early collapse leaves Sunderland exposed

Sunderland were behind inside six minutes after Kevin Danso was beaten too easily by Evanilson. The Bournemouth forward created the opening for Marcus Tavernier, who headed into an unguarded net to register his fourth goal of the season.

Danso’s difficult afternoon became far worse 11 minutes later. Evanilson used his power to move ahead of the former Tottenham defender while driving towards the box, and Danso dragged him down as he fell. Referee Craig Pawson produced a straight red card for the challenge near the edge of the area.

  • 6th minute: Tavernier put Bournemouth ahead from Evanilson’s delivery.
  • 17th minute: Danso was dismissed for bringing down Evanilson.
  • Half-time: Sunderland remained only one goal behind despite playing with 10 men.

Roefs delays Bournemouth before Evanilson strikes

Robin Roefs kept Sunderland in contention before the interval, producing two sharp stops to deny Bournemouth winger Rayan.

But the visitors’ resistance broke down three minutes after the restart. Omar Alderete underhit a pass back towards Roefs, leaving Evanilson free to seize on the mistake. The striker went around the Sunderland goalkeeper and rolled the ball home for 2-0.

It was a deserved reward for Evanilson, who had caused Sunderland problems throughout with his pace, strength and direct running.

Relief for Rose and Bournemouth

The result gives Rose breathing room after Bournemouth’s unconvincing domestic start. The Cherries had already made a positive beginning in Europe, winning their first two Europa League games against Real Sociedad and Sturm Graz, but had been waiting for a league breakthrough.

Rose arrived on the south coast during the summer after leaving RB Leipzig in March following poor Bundesliga results. He replaced Andoni Iraola, who had taken Bournemouth to sixth place last season and delivered the club’s historic Europa League qualification.

Bournemouth First domestic victory; moved out of the bottom three
Sunderland 19th place, four points

What happens next for Sunderland

Sunderland’s away problems are deepening, with the Black Cats still without a league win since beating Fulham on August 30. Their survival fight has become more difficult after another defeat on the road, while Danso now faces a suspension following his early dismissal.
