Garnacho Waits for Aston Villa Debut as Emery Leaves Chelsea Loanee Benched
Alejandro Garnacho remained unused as Aston Villa beat Coventry City 3-1 to book a Carabao Cup fourth-round trip to Bournemouth, extending the Chelsea loanee’s wait for a first appearance in three matches.
Unai Emery made seven alterations to his starting side for the Coventry tie but kept Garnacho on the bench throughout. The 22-year-old has played only 31 competitive minutes this season after a difficult start to his year-long move from Stamford Bridge, which contains a conditional £42.5 million purchase requirement.
Tammy Abraham struck twice against Coventry, while Ross Barkley completed Villa’s scoring after Victor Torp had found the net for the visitors. The cup win offers some relief for Emery, but it did not produce the opportunity Garnacho needed to accelerate his integration.
Emery sets challenge for Garnacho
Emery made clear that the former Manchester United winger must continue earning his chance on the training pitch. The Villa manager said Garnacho is still behind other members of the squad and must work consistently, then take his opportunity when minutes arrive.
“He has to keep working and training,” Emery said. “When he gets time on the pitch, he must play well. He is improving, but there are players ahead of him at the moment.”
Competition in Villa’s attacking ranks is fierce. Emery praised George Hemmings’ “fantastic” displays, said Alysson is increasingly delivering what the coach wants, and noted that Ibrahim Mbaye has also responded strongly.
“We want a competitive team and players who can compete in the way we play,” Emery added.
Pre-season injury slowed Villa start
Garnacho’s progress was disrupted by a facial injury in pre-season, forcing him to miss the Super Cup final against Paris Saint-Germain. That absence left him chasing fitness and tactical sharpness after arriving at Villa.
Emery had previously backed the Argentine’s approach before Villa’s Premier League loss to Nottingham Forest, insisting his commitment and attitude were at the required level.
The Spaniard said Garnacho needs patience and daily hard work, but added that he has seen gradual improvement and believes the player can reach his best level if he remains consistent.
What happens next
Villa must now turn their cup momentum into league points. They are 19th in the Premier League with one point from four games ahead of Saturday’s major meeting with fellow strugglers Tottenham Hotspur.
Garnacho will be pushing to feature in that fixture and in the later Carabao Cup fourth-round away tie at Bournemouth, as he looks to build match fitness and begin making an impact in the West Midlands.
