Emergence Day story: humanity’s first Locust encounter
Gears of War: E-Day takes place during the cataclysmic events of Emergence Day, when humanity faces the Locust for the first time. Outgunned and caught off guard, the task falls to Marcus Fenix to rally survivors and help turn the tide of the conflict.
While the hands-on preview did not include the campaign, the focus was on the game’s multiplayer suite—particularly what The Coalition has changed to make the modes feel fresh without losing the franchise’s identity.
Built for smoother movement, with a legacy option
The Coalition’s approach centers on movement. E-Day’s core gameplay was built from the ground up, aiming to make character motion feel more fluid and natural compared to earlier entries.
Despite the updated flow, characters are still described as maintaining that heavy, heavily armed weight in motion. Players also get more flexibility in how they position themselves, and the controls were updated to support the new feel. If you prefer an older setup, the preview notes that a legacy control layout can be selected.
Versus: familiar modes, updated gameplay
In Versus, The Coalition sticks closely to what fans expect from a Gears PvP offering. The preview included 4v4 Team Deathmatch and Conquest, both presented as throwbacks—while still benefiting from the new movement and gameplay changes.
Those adjustments are positioned as making matches feel more intense, with fights described as demanding and “sweaty,” especially when you’re trying to land enough shots to keep momentum before your health runs out.
Horde Siege expands the format with squads and side objectives
Horde mode is branded as Horde Siege, and the preview described a major emphasis on structure and scale. The E-Day version places teams on large maps containing multiple arenas, designed to support the idea of moving through sections rather than being confined to a single play space.
A full group consists of a squad of four tasked with surviving wave after wave of Locust enemies until extraction. Two additional squads join in, bringing the total player count to 12 as multiple teams fight through the same threat.
How Horde Siege progression works
- Squads complete side objectives alongside the main objective
- Finishing side objectives rewards squad perks
- Players can encounter other squads during side activities and team up
- Example encounter highlighted: joining another team to take down a massive Brumak
The preview also notes multiple variants of Horde Siege to choose from, including Blitz, Siege, and classic Horde. Overall, E-Day’s iteration is framed as an evolution of the mode rather than a complete reinvention.
Early access, open beta, and launch platforms
Gears of War: E-Day launches October 6 on Xbox Series X|S and PC. Preorders of the $100 Premium Edition and the $200 Collector’s Edition will unlock early access to the full game starting October 1.
An open beta is scheduled to begin next month, offering players an early taste before the full release.
