Carvajal has already visited Getafe’s facilities and met head coach Jose Bordalas and assistant Patri Moreno as he begins work with his new team-mates. The former Real Madrid right-back said he was eager to start training.

Getafe regard the arrival as the biggest signing in the club’s history. Carvajal brings an exceptional record, having won six European Cups and collected 27 club trophies, as well as two major international titles with Spain.

The defender accepted a substantial reduction in salary to remain in Madrid and continue playing in the Spanish top flight. Bordalas’ personal call was decisive in the move, with the coach outlining a role either at right-back alongside Kiko Femenia or on the right of a three-man central defence.

Registration remains the immediate issue. Getafe are attempting to complete the paperwork before Monday, which would put Carvajal in contention for the derby with Rayo. He is still unlikely to feature in Thursday’s Europa Conference League trip to Craiova.

His first return to the Santiago Bernabeu as a Getafe player is expected in early January, when Los Azulones are due to face Real Madrid.
