Michael Carrick Faces Defining Atletico Madrid and Leeds Tests
Manchester United head into Tuesday’s Champions League trip to Atletico Madrid with Michael Carrick under mounting pressure, before an already hostile Premier League visit to Leeds United on Sunday.

United have scored only twice across their past three league games and were held by Tottenham despite the visitors playing with 10 men. Their Carabao Cup campaign also ended after Brighton recovered from a two-goal deficit.
Bruno Fernandes remains the central figure in Carrick’s side. The Portuguese midfielder struck a hat-trick in the 5-2 win over promoted Ipswich at the end of August, United’s strongest performance of the campaign so far. Since then, however, the results have sharply deteriorated.
Former Leeds defender Stephen Kilgallon believes Fernandes is the player Leeds must neutralise if they are to extend United’s problems. He questioned who else in the United squad can take control when their captain is below his best, naming Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha as players who have not delivered enough.
Kilgallon described Fernandes as an outstanding player but criticised aspects of his on-pitch leadership, pointing to his visible frustration with team-mates. He contrasted that with Leeds skipper Ethan Ampadu, who he feels would encourage a player after a missed chance rather than show anger. In Kilgallon’s view, shutting down Fernandes currently goes a long way towards shutting down United.
Carrick faces demanding away run
United’s match in Madrid begins a sequence of three consecutive away fixtures. Carrick’s position has come under greater scrutiny following the Tottenham display, particularly United’s first-half performance.
Kilgallon said Carrick’s personality and playing background suggested he should have been able to unite the group, but he does not see enough togetherness in the current squad. He questioned whether every player is fully behind the manager and suggested there are disruptive figures in the dressing room.
Leeds, meanwhile, will see Sunday’s meeting as a major opportunity. Kilgallon warned that if United begin at Elland Road as poorly as they did against Tottenham, the home side could quickly establish a three-goal lead. He said Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Noah Okafor have the quality to punish openings Tottenham failed to take.
The former defender stressed that Carrick understands the scale and atmosphere of the fixture from his time as a United player. Elland Road will be ready, he said, with Leeds supporters identifying this game as one of the first dates they search for when the schedule is released.
Leeds arrive with confidence
Leeds took four points from United last season, drawing at Elland Road before winning at Old Trafford. They also pushed reigning champions Arsenal hard in their latest match, losing 2-1 despite registering 11 attempts on goal.
Kilgallon highlighted the goal as evidence of Leeds’ ambition, with wing-back Gabriel Gudmundsson supplying fellow full-back James Justin. Rather than sitting deep against the division’s biggest clubs, Leeds have continued to attack with confidence.
Promotion in 2025 triggered an effective recruitment drive which has helped Daniel Farke’s side develop rapidly. Kilgallon praised the newcomers brought into the squad, while Leeds are also progressing with Elland Road improvement work intended to increase capacity.
There has been growing talk of a possible European push, with Farke extracting strong form from a squad playing with belief. United must now negotiate Madrid before facing a Leeds team convinced it can trouble anyone.
