Gotham FC Secure Home Playoff Match as NWSL Shield Race Tightens
Gotham FC have guaranteed a home playoff match after a 1-1 draw with Angel City, although Taylor Suarez’s 91st-minute equaliser denied the league leaders a victory that would have strengthened their NWSL Shield bid.
The title race remains tight heading into the international break. Gotham are being chased by second-placed San Diego Wave, who have 51 points after their 16th win of the campaign, and Washington Spirit, third on 49 points.
Weekend playoff race
- Gotham took the lead against Angel City through Jaedyn Shaw after a flowing team move, but substitute Suarez struck in added time. It was her third goal as a substitute in four outings and extended Angel City’s unbeaten sequence to seven games.
- San Diego beat Orlando Pride 2-1, overcoming a Barbra Banda penalty as their pressing game caused repeated problems for the hosts.
- Washington stayed in the Shield picture by winning 3-2 at Houston Dash, with three different Spirit players scoring. Houston twice drew level through Miljana Ivanović, whose first two NWSL goals also made her the competition’s first Serbian scorer, before Clara Luvanga found the 84th-minute winner.
- North Carolina Courage moved into eighth, the final playoff position, after Gianna Paul’s first professional goal secured a 1-0 win over Seattle Reign. Ashley Sanchez has now matched the NWSL single-season scoring record with 20 goals, but the Courage remain locked in a tense race for the postseason.
- Utah Royals remain fourth after their 1-1 draw at Racing Louisville. Louisville were on course to end their losing run through Katie O’Kane’s first-half penalty, only for Brecken Mozingo to level six minutes into stoppage time. The result ended Racing’s six-match losing streak, but they remain 15th on 24 points.
- Kansas City Current kept their playoff push alive in emphatic fashion, beating Bay FC 5-1 at CPKC Stadium. Debinha scored a hat-trick to drive the Current’s attack.
- Boston Legacy defeated Portland Thorns 4-2 despite already being out of the running for the playoffs. Amanda Gutierres scored twice, while Portland’s defensive display left their own postseason qualification still unresolved.
- Denver Summit FC won 3-0 against Chicago Stars, inspired by Lindsey Heaps. Denver sit 10th and remain outside the playoff places, but still have a route into the top eight if results fall their way.
Eliminations confirmed
Houston’s defeat to Washington ended their playoff chances. They join Chicago, Racing Louisville, Bay FC and Boston in being eliminated from postseason contention.
Bay could not live with Kansas City’s attacking display and are now officially out. Chicago’s loss to Denver was their 20th defeat of the season, underlining the scale of the rebuild facing new chief soccer officer Vlatko Andonovski.
What happens next
Gotham return from the international break with home-field advantage already secured and the Shield still in reach. San Diego and Washington have little margin for error behind them, while North Carolina, Seattle, Kansas City, Denver and Portland face a decisive final push for playoff places.
Seattle’s 1-0 loss to North Carolina dropped them to ninth, immediately below the playoff line, and a demanding run of away matches awaits after the break. Utah, meanwhile, remain well placed in fourth. Defender Kate Del Fava has also received her first senior United States call-up after Naomi Girma was ruled out through injury.
