Harry Kane Says Beckham Inspired His Career-Defining Bayern Munich Move
Harry Kane has called his move from the Premier League to the Bundesliga the best decision of his career, revealing that David Beckham’s leap from Manchester United to Real Madrid helped shape his own willingness to leave England.
Kane’s key reflections

The England captain grew up in the same London area as Beckham and attended the same school, making the former midfielder a particularly powerful influence. Kane watched Beckham lead England and wanted to follow a route from north London to the national side’s captaincy.
“Beckham was definitely my idol,” Kane said. “We went to the same school and were from the same area. He was England captain when I was young, so I wanted to follow that path.”
Beckham’s 2003 switch to Spain initially felt distant to Kane, but his view changed as his own career developed. The striker said that understanding himself better as a player at elite level made an overseas challenge increasingly attractive.
He believes English footballers do not always take that route, but said the chance to experience a different league and culture has been hugely positive. Kane also described his decision to leave the Premier League as partly following Beckham’s example.
Gerrard message praised by England captain
Kane also reflected on support received during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including a voice note from Steven Gerrard. The former Liverpool and England midfielder said he regretted never sharing a pitch with Kane during their international careers.
Kane said playing alongside Gerrard would have been “a nice one”, joking that he would probably have scored more goals with the midfielder supplying passes.
He ranked Gerrard among England’s greatest-ever players and one of the finest midfielders in world football. Kane said stories from former England players about Gerrard’s training standards, passing and striking of the ball underlined his all-round quality and commitment across the pitch.
Ballon d’Or focus turns to voters
After a campaign packed with major individual numbers for club and country, Kane is firmly in the Ballon d’Or discussion. But the striker is refusing to predict the result.
He said his performances are on the record, while the final call belongs to the voters. Kane added that he is already looking ahead to the new season and considering how he can improve again, even as he tries to appreciate what he has achieved so far.
