Haugen’s Late Goal Earns Viking 3-3 Draw Against Bayern Munich
Herman Haugen struck in the 90th minute to deny Bayern Munich victory as Viking salvaged a 3-3 Champions League draw at the Lyse Arena, punishing the visitors after a chaotic finish in which Bayern had already surrendered a two-goal deficit and then lost Michael Olise to a red card.
Viking stun Bayern early before Kane leads comeback
Bayern controlled the ball for much of the night, with possession figures above 60 per cent, but Vincent Kompany’s side were flat and exposed before the interval. Viking took advantage of defensive uncertainty almost immediately.
- Gianni Stensness put the hosts ahead after two minutes.
- Peter Christiansen doubled Viking’s lead late in the first half.
- Bayern had 25 attempts overall, while Viking made their limited openings count.
- The Bayern goalkeeper, deputising for Manuel Neuer, made two saves but conceded three times from five efforts on target.
Kompany reacted with a triple substitution at half-time, removing Jonathan Tah, Lennart Karl and a young midfielder as Bayern shifted into a more aggressive shape. The changes raised Bayern’s tempo and gave their attacking players more room to operate.
Harry Kane began the recovery from the penalty spot in the 54th minute, then levelled six minutes later after Bayern’s captain supplied the assist. Luis Diaz completed the turnaround in the 71st minute, finishing a move created by Konrad Laimer.
Late red card and late equaliser change the picture
Bayern’s lead did not hold. Olise, who had repeatedly drifted inside to combine with teammates and draw Viking defenders towards the right flank, was sent off in the 74th minute. Kompany introduced Josip Stanisic for Diaz in the 77th minute in an attempt to protect the advantage, while Hiroki Ito arrived after another change in the 83rd.
The defensive reshuffle failed to close the game out. Haugen found the equaliser in the final minute, leaving Bayern with a draw after they had briefly looked set for an impressive escape.
Defensive concerns remain for Kompany
Bayern’s recovery highlighted Kane’s clinical edge and the captain’s influence in midfield, but the away side were vulnerable in transition throughout the first half and could not manage the final stages with 10 men.
- The South Korean defender struggled against Viking’s physical approach and was caught between decisions during counter-attacks.
- Tah was beaten by the early tempo, with his positioning questioned before his half-time withdrawal.
- Karl found the occasion difficult, offering little going forward and struggling with Viking’s wide overlaps before he was taken off at the interval.
- The young midfielder was bypassed in central areas and also made way as Bayern pursued a more attacking setup.
- Bischof showed technical quality and kept Bayern circulating possession, but could not consistently unlock Viking’s compact defending.
- Laimer improved after a difficult first half, despite a 52nd-minute booking, and produced the assist for Diaz before being substituted.
What happens next
Kompany will take encouragement from the impact of his half-time intervention and from Kane’s two-goal response. But Bayern must address the slow start, the defensive instability and their inability to protect a lead after Diaz’s 71st-minute goal, particularly with Olise now facing disciplinary consequences after his dismissal.
