Henderson Scores Twice as Chelsea Thrash Bournemouth 5-1
Chelsea surged into fifth place in the Premier League after a 5-1 demolition of Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge, with Jordan Henderson scoring twice on his home debut and Moises Caicedo making an influential return from injury.
Henderson struck within the opening two minutes before Morgan Rogers quickly extended Chelsea’s advantage. Joao Pedro then took over in front of goal, scoring twice, with Bournemouth’s Evanilson briefly reducing the deficit through a scrappy finish between the Brazilian’s strikes.
Henderson completed the rout in the 70th minute, curling in a free-kick to seal a commanding result for Xabi Alonso’s side. The three points moved Chelsea above the chasing pack and into fifth, although they remain behind London rivals Brentford on goal difference.
Caicedo’s return gives Chelsea control
Caicedo had featured for only 14 minutes this season after suffering a calf problem, but his comeback offered Chelsea a major midfield lift. Alan Shearer singled out the Ecuador international’s defensive work, composure in possession and ability to give the attacking players greater freedom.
Shearer felt Chelsea’s front three and Henderson had excelled, but argued that Caicedo’s experience and all-round midfield contribution had been central to the performance. The former striker praised the midfielder’s ability to recover possession, shield the back line and keep Chelsea moving forward with simple, effective decisions.
The opening goal underlined that impact. Caicedo won the ball and immediately looked to play forward, allowing Henderson to break on with confidence because of the protection behind him. Henderson supplied the finish, but the move began with Caicedo’s quick intervention and forward-thinking pass.
Chelsea will look to carry that momentum into next weekend’s league programme, when Alonso’s team travel to Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
