Hull City Hold Chelsea to 2-2 Draw at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea were held to a 2-2 Premier League draw by unbeaten Hull City at Stamford Bridge after João Pedro struck a 65th-minute equaliser.
What we know
- Morgan Rogers put Chelsea ahead after seven minutes, finishing a move started by Cole Palmer and João Pedro following Emi Martínez’s claim from a Hull corner.
- Hull turned the game before half-time. Mohamed Belloumi levelled in the 28th minute after Ryan Giles’s cross caught Jorrel Hato out, then scored again after Martínez failed to deal cleanly with a corner. Semi Ajayi hit the bar before Oli McBurnie set up Belloumi’s deflected finish.
- Pedro restored parity when Palmer found him across the penalty area. Chelsea later sent on Estêvão and Danny Welbeck, but Hull had the clearest late opening as Mohamed-Ali Cho missed the chance to win it. Palmer also fired a late free-kick over.
- Hull have eight points from four matches and are still without a defeat. The promoted side have beaten Manchester United 2-0 and Coventry 1-0, drawn 0-0 with Aston Villa, and conceded only two league goals before this trip to Chelsea.
- Chelsea have now gone 20 Premier League matches without a clean sheet and have conceded nine times in four league games this season. They were without Moisés Caicedo, while Xabi Alonso’s switch to a back four did not prevent further defensive errors.
- Hato was replaced at half-time by Pep Chavarría. Reece James, again used in central midfield, tested Konstantinos Tzolakis from a free-kick, while Pedro headed over under pressure from Nobel Mendy, who was injured in that incident. McBurnie led Hull’s attack strongly and substitute Sorba Thomas featured a day after being involved in a car accident.
What happens next
Chelsea must find defensive stability quickly after another game in which their Rogers-Palmer-Pedro attack delivered but their back line faltered. Hull head on with momentum, further new arrivals still to be introduced, and a four-game unbeaten start that has already exceeded early relegation expectations.
