IO Interactive says it had to rein in Bond’s gadget approach in 007 First Light after early ideas didn’t feel right in play, even though the studio was aiming for stylish tools that create opportunities for close-quarters combat. The game’s launch also drew major early sales, with 1.5 million units sold in its first day.

Bond gadgets tuned back to fit close combat

Senior combat designer Tom Marcham explained that the team originally included gadget concepts they believed would be “cool,” but found that when players used them, they looked and felt off during actual gameplay. Marcham said there was a point where Bond started to resemble “Mr. Gadget,” and the team adjusted the design to better match what the game is trying to deliver.

Marcham also described how 007 First Light frames Bond’s gadgetry around espionage and creating openings, aligning with the game’s close-range focus. The studio intentionally avoided making Bond’s kit feel too “gamey,” such as relying constantly on tasers or sleep darts, because Marcham felt it didn’t fit the character. Instead, the gameplay was built around a close combat element supported by gadget-driven opportunity windows.

More replayability planned through gadget and ruleset tweaks

While the current gadget design emphasizes close combat and espionage tools, IO Interactive says it continues to experiment with Bond’s field equipment. Marcham said the studio will keep expanding how players can replay encounters and “play about with the ruleset” to get more out of the campaign. He also suggested there’s more to explore in the “whole world” of who Bond is and why he uses gadgets, indicating future additions may focus on broadening how players approach situations.

  • 007 First Light sold 1.5 million units in its first 24 hours
  • Post-launch plans include new challenges and upgrades, photo mode, and a new game plus mode
  • A story expansion is planned, featuring Bawma—the pirate king portrayed as the game’s worst character

What to watch next

IO Interactive has outlined a full year of post-launch content for 007 First Light, continuing the studio’s approach seen previously with the Hitman: World of Assassination trilogy. The next key updates to track are the scheduled new challenges, upgrades, photo mode, new game plus mode, and the story expansion tied to Bawma.
