James Trafford backed to bounce back after costly Arsenal error for Leeds
Leeds United goalkeeper James Trafford has been backed to recover quickly from his costly Arsenal error, with former Whites defender Matthew Kilgallon insisting the £40 million summer signing remains capable of saving Daniel Farke’s side significant points.
Arsenal mistake does not alter Leeds assessment
Trafford was unable to deal with Riccardo Calafiori’s relatively straightforward effort in Leeds’ 2-1 loss at the Emirates Stadium, with the ball ending up in the roof of his own net. The result was Leeds’ first Premier League defeat of the campaign, but it has not changed Kilgallon’s view of the 24-year-old.
Kilgallon said Trafford is “a top signing” and believes the goalkeeper has the personality to move on from the mistake. He compared Trafford’s calm-looking shot-stopping style to former England goalkeeper David Seaman, while noting the visual similarity of their ponytails.
“That opening goal at Arsenal will frustrate him; he should stop it,” Kilgallon said. “But he has the character to put it behind him, and Leeds should do the same.”
Trafford’s path back to regular football
Leeds paid £40 million to bring Trafford in from Manchester City during the summer of 2026, making him the club’s most expensive acquisition. He had found opportunities limited during his second spell at City, where Gianluigi Donnarumma stood ahead of him in the goalkeeping order.
The former Manchester academy product has quickly become an important part of Farke’s Premier League plans in West Yorkshire. He has also added to his England caps since making the move, despite the scrutiny that followed the Arsenal defeat.
- Trafford came through Manchester’s academy system before building senior experience elsewhere.
- He made 28 Premier League appearances for Burnley in their 2023-24 relegation season.
- A return to Manchester City did not provide the regular minutes he wanted, with Donnarumma in place.
- Leeds completed a £40 million deal in summer 2026 and installed him as a key figure in their new top-flight side.
- His error against Arsenal came in Leeds’ first league loss, but the club remain well placed after six matches.
Concentration remains the development point
Kilgallon said Trafford may need to show the same constant focus associated with England goalkeepers Jordan Pickford and Aaron Ramsdale. He suggested that communication from the touchline and goalkeeper coach could help keep the Leeds No. 1 fully switched on during quieter spells.
He stressed that Trafford is still young for a goalkeeper and has not yet accumulated extensive Premier League experience. Of his 38 appearances in the division, 28 came for a Burnley side that was regularly under pressure and ultimately relegated in 2023-24.
“Focus is massive in the Premier League,” Kilgallon said. “That Arsenal moment was more likely a lapse than a reflection of his ability. He has the potential to be England’s first-choice goalkeeper for many years.”

European push could depend on Trafford’s growth
Leeds sit seventh with nine points from six matches, despite the reverse at Arsenal. Their recruitment has encouraged talk of a possible European qualification challenge in 2027, and Trafford’s progress will be central to that ambition.
- Leeds regard Trafford as a long-term first-choice goalkeeper rather than a short-term solution.
- The Arsenal error has raised concentration questions, but not doubts over his wider potential.
- More Premier League matches should provide the experience he still lacks.
- Kilgallon believes £40 million could look like strong value within two years if Trafford continues to develop.
