JJ Gabriel Seeks Manchester United Exit in Barcelona

Manchester United teenager JJ Gabriel has travelled to Barcelona for talks as he pushes to leave the club, with the 15-year-old having flown from the UK via France before arriving in Catalonia.

Gabriel has not returned to training since scoring three times on his UEFA Youth League debut. That display came before he was left out of the group for United’s 4-0 Champions League victory over Sabah.

Barcelona have been following the young forward for some time. He was invited to visit the club’s facilities in August 2024, when he also met Lamine Yamal.

His Irish passport could prove decisive. British players generally cannot sign for overseas clubs before their 18th birthday, but Gabriel’s EU eligibility means he can move to a club within the European Union once he reaches 16 next month.

United manager Michael Carrick said the club’s focus is on Gabriel’s welfare as scrutiny around the situation grows. Carrick stressed that the player is still very young, urged caution over public discussion and said the matter would eventually be resolved.

If United retain Gabriel’s registration, he would be unable to join another English club during this season. The immediate question is whether an agreement can be reached before October 6, when Barcelona or one of the other leading European sides could act.
