Joao Pedro Set to Boost Chelsea for Bournemouth Clash After Injury Layoff
Joao Pedro is expected to return from a minor injury for Chelsea’s home Premier League match against Bournemouth on October 10, handing Xabi Alonso a timely attacking lift after a difficult run before the international break.
Pedro return offers Chelsea a focal point
The Brazilian has scored three times this season but has recently been sidelined, interrupting his work alongside Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer. Chelsea have still created opportunities, yet their defensive problems have dragged results down.

Alonso has compared Pedro’s all-round game to Karim Benzema, his former Real Madrid team-mate. Benzema, now a free agent after leaving Al-Hilal, scored 354 goals across 14 seasons at Real, won the 2022 Ballon d’Or and formed part of the celebrated BBC front line with Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.
The Chelsea manager highlighted Pedro’s movement in and around the penalty area, ability to shift onto his left foot, aerial threat and decision-making. Alonso said the forward remains young with areas to refine, but possesses “outstanding qualities” and has set himself the target of scoring heavily across the campaign.
Former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink also identified clear similarities, pointing to the pair’s technical quality, intelligence, willingness to drop into midfield and composure in front of goal. He stressed, however, that Pedro has not yet reached Benzema’s level.
Defensive reset remains Alonso’s priority
Chelsea have moved to reinforce their back line by signing Argentina World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa in a £7.5 million ($10m) deal. Hasselbaink believes the goalkeeper’s leadership and presence could prove as important as his shot-stopping.
Martinez has not yet produced his best form, but Hasselbaink said responsibility cannot rest entirely with the goalkeeper, with the players ahead of him also needing to improve. He welcomed the addition of an experienced winner and vocal character to the squad.
