Julián Álvarez Ruled Out of Atlético Madrid’s Real Sociedad Clash
Atlético Madrid will face Real Sociedad in San Sebastián without Julián Álvarez after the Argentina forward suffered a muscle strain in training and was ruled out following medical tests.
The club confirmed Álvarez had to leave Wednesday’s session and will not travel for the La Liga match at Anoeta. It is a major late blow for Diego Simeone, whose side are trying to halt a two-match losing run.
Álvarez ruled out after training issue
- Álvarez completed 90 minutes in Atlético’s defeat to Liverpool at Anfield last Wednesday, having returned to Simeone’s starting XI.
- The forward then sustained a muscular problem during training and withdrew from the session.
- Club medical checks ruled him out of the trip to San Sebastián, with staff acting quickly to avoid aggravating the issue.
The 25-year-old had become a regular in Atlético’s attack, making his absence especially damaging after the side struggled for a cutting edge in recent defeats.
Striker options reduced
Álvarez joins Pablo Barrios and Alexander Sørloth among the absentees. With the Argentine and Sørloth unavailable, Jonathan David is the only recognised senior centre-forward in the travelling group.
Simeone has called up a sizeable squad featuring Musso, Vergas, Mendoza, Johnny, Koke, Han In, Baena, Lookman, Oblak, Marcos Llorente, Arnau Ortiz, Hancko, Marc Pubill, Giuliano Simeone, Cuti Romero, Grimaldo, Hjulmand, Le Normand, Esquivel, Domínguez, Martínez and Castillo.
What happens next
Atlético arrive after consecutive losses away to Athletic Club and Liverpool. Simeone must now reshape his forward line for a demanding away match as his team chase an immediate La Liga response and seek to remain in the early-season race.
