Madrid have several possible ways to cover Mbappe’s absence while he completes his recovery. Espi is one option in the existing shape, though Mourinho sees the Under-21 international primarily as a conventional centre-forward suited to facing packed defences.
Another route would be to use Jude Bellingham as a false nine, a position he previously occupied under Carlo Ancelotti. That move could open space for Arda Guler to operate behind him, with Diomande continuing from the right.
The coaching staff will work through those alternatives before Villarreal. Madrid’s position is clear: Mbappe will not return until he can play without discomfort and is fully fit.
