La Liga Plans Tougher Sanctions Over Fresh Abusive Chanting Cases
La Liga has formally recorded fresh cases of abusive chanting at Spanish matches and is preparing tougher sanctions, including possible partial stadium closures for repeat offenders.
Latest crowd-behaviour cases
| Match | Incident | League response |
|---|---|---|
| Real Sociedad v Deportivo La Coruna | Supporters aimed insults at Vinicius before half-time | Incident included in the latest conduct report |
| Barcelona v Getafe | Chants insulting Real Madrid were heard three times | Case has been documented for potential action |
| Possible sanctions | Targeted stands could be punished | Suspended partial closures are under consideration |
The sharpest episode came at Real Sociedad’s game against Deportivo La Coruna, where a section of home fans in the lower tier repeatedly sang an insult aimed at Real Madrid forward Vinicius.
Vinicius was not involved in the fixture and was not at the stadium. The chants came a day after he had been sent off against Villarreal for pulling an opponent’s hair.
La Liga also flagged the atmosphere at Barcelona’s match with Getafe. Anti-Real Madrid chants were registered on three separate occasions, adding further tension before the next Clasico.
The league has made clearing discriminatory and insulting abuse from stadiums a major priority this season. Preventative work was introduced at the start of the campaign, but officials are now considering a more forceful disciplinary response.
French-style crowd-control measures are being examined, with sanctions potentially focusing on the specific areas of a ground where offences occur. Suspended bans on individual stands are expected to be among the first options available if clubs fail to stop the behaviour.
