Malaysia Receive FIFA Approval for JDT Duo Bergson and Tapp
Malaysia have received FIFA clearance for Johor Darul Ta’zim pair Bergson and Tapp, handing interim coach Tan Cheng Hoe two new options ahead of the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup in Jakarta.
FIFA approves Bergson and Tapp
The Football Association of Malaysia confirmed on Sunday that FIFA had completed its eligibility review and approved both JDT players for Harimau Malaya duty under the applicable regulations.
- Bergson, the 35-year-old Brazilian-born striker, qualifies after completing five years of residency with JDT, where he has played since early 2021.
- The forward has delivered 198 goals and 35 assists in 193 appearances across all competitions for the Malaysian champions.
- Tapp, a 25-year-old centre-back standing 183cm, has been approved through ancestry.
- Verification established that the former Australia youth-linked player has never played for Australia at senior international level.
FAM said FIFA had formally confirmed the duo’s status after reviewing their cases. The association stated that its submission had been accepted once the world body’s eligibility process was concluded.
JDT defender already settled after summer move
Tapp joined JDT from Central Coast Mariners in the summer 2026 transfer window and has quickly become involved in the domestic campaign. He has appeared in four of JDT’s first five league matches this season.
His clearance gives Malaysia another central-defensive option, while Bergson adds a proven penalty-box presence following his prolific return at club level.
Hidalgo and Lowry cases remain unresolved
FAM is still waiting for FIFA’s decision on two further JDT players: Argentine forward Manuel Hidalgo and Australian centre-back Shane Lowry.
- Hidalgo’s international eligibility documents remain under verification at FIFA headquarters.
- Lowry’s case is also still being assessed, with no final ruling announced.
- FAM said both files remain in FIFA’s review process and that it has not yet received an official outcome.
What happens next: ASEAN Cup test in Jakarta
Tan Cheng Hoe will lead Malaysia into the first FIFA ASEAN Cup from September 25 to October 5 in Jakarta. He took charge on an interim basis in June 2026 after Peter Cklamovski left for Salford City.
Malaysia have been placed in Group A and will face hosts Indonesia, Singapore and Bangladesh. The tournament will provide Bergson and Tapp with an immediate opportunity to prove their readiness at international level if selected.
