Manchester United are weighing up Barcelona midfielder Fermín López as a potential successor to captain Bruno Fernandes, whose future has been thrown into doubt after a public dispute with manager Michael Carrick.

López, 23, has opened the campaign with five goals and four assists and is one of United’s options for the No. 10 role alongside Atlético Madrid’s Pablo Barrios. Barcelona would seek about €80 million for López, who missed Spain’s World Cup-winning run because of a foot injury. Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea are also monitoring him.

United are also planning defensive business for January. Fulham captain Calvin Bassey, 26, is under consideration after a strong start to the season, while injuries to Luke Shaw, Patrick Dorgu and Benjamin Sesko have increased the need for a left-back and centre-forward.

  • Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall and Bournemouth’s Adrien Truffert have previously been linked as possible left-back targets for United.
  • Galatasaray’s Victor Osimhen, Leeds United’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta have been mentioned in connection with the striker search.
  • Lisandro Martínez could leave United in January for a modest fee if a club moves early, with Barcelona and Atlético both interested. The 28-year-old is otherwise expected to be available without a transfer fee when his contract ends this season.
  • United are also tracking Real Madrid youth attacker Alberto Ruiz, 15, after his role in Spain’s Under-15 World Cup success.
  • At the same time, United teenager JJ Gabriel, 16, is nearing an exit for Real Madrid after indicating he wants to leave Old Trafford.

Arsenal assess Endrick loan

Arsenal are exploring a January loan for Real Madrid forward Endrick. The 20-year-old Brazil international has struggled for minutes under José Mourinho, despite Arsenal already having Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyökeres as central attacking options.

Mourinho wants Endrick to remain in Madrid, but the player’s representatives are considering alternatives. AC Milan are also looking at a deal for next summer and are expected to send Nottingham Forest loanee Omari Hutchinson back once his temporary spell finishes.

Arsenal are additionally interested in Club Brugge striker Nicolo Tresoldi, 22, although the Belgian side’s asking price is €50 million.

Barcelona and European market moves

Barcelona are preparing to revive their pursuit of Inter Milan centre-back Alessandro Bastoni in January. The Catalan club had considered a €70 million bid last summer, but no agreement was reached and the 27-year-old Italy international stayed at Inter.

  • Everton lead a group of Premier League clubs following Minnesota United and Ghana forward Kelvin Yeboah.
  • Leeds United are interested in Maccabi Tel Aviv midfielder Issouf Sissokho.
  • Crystal Palace want Lecce defender Tiago Gabriel, 21, but face competition from Serie A sides.
  • Napoli have made Nuremberg and Italy striker Mohamed Ali Zoma a leading January objective.

What happens next

January is the immediate pressure point for United’s rebuild, Arsenal’s search for more goals and Barcelona’s defensive plans. Martínez’s situation could accelerate before the window closes, while Fernandes and López are likely to remain central to United’s midfield planning through the second half of the season.
