Man Utd Submit Scholarship Offer to Keep JJ Gabriel Amid Exit Threat

Manchester United have submitted a formal scholarship offer to 16-year-old forward JJ Gabriel, protecting their right to compensation if he leaves the academy for another club.

Gabriel recently asked for his United registration to be cancelled and has not attended training at Carrington for more than three weeks. The scholarship proposal covers next season and prevents the teenager from departing without a fee in the January window.

Standoff over Gabriel’s future

United have spent five years developing Gabriel and want a substantial return should he choose a new club. A move to another Premier League side would require the clubs to strike a fee agreement, with the Professional Football Compensation Committee able to decide the payment if no deal is reached.

United could use the Rio Ngumoha case as a reference point. Liverpool were required to pay Chelsea £2.8m initially, with a further £1.2m possible in add-ons, for the young player. United are understood to value Gabriel at more than £3m and would seek a 20% sell-on clause.

  • Gabriel has turned 16 and has received a scholarship offer for the coming campaign.
  • He asked to end his United registration last month.
  • Club officials have made repeated welfare checks during his absence from training.
  • A recently released squad image featuring Gabriel briefly raised hopes of a settlement, but relations between his representatives and United’s hierarchy remain strained.

First-team demands broke negotiations

United had attempted to map out a senior pathway for Gabriel, including a meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson. The club also gave him the No. 77 shirt and sought Premier League approval for “Gabriel JR” to appear on his kit.

However, his camp wanted the teenager to train only with the first-team group during pre-season rather than return to the Under-21s. The requests later included assurances over minutes in three senior matches: against Brighton, Bournemouth and Sabah.

United would not commit to a minimum 20-minute appearance in those fixtures. Gabriel was subsequently omitted from the club’s Champions League list and Carabao Cup group.

What happens next

Gabriel is thought to favour a switch to one of Europe’s major leagues, where a buying club would face a far lower compensation bill than an English rival. Real Madrid are viewed as the leading contender, while Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain are monitoring the situation.

The teenager is currently keeping fit at a private facility in Catalonia as talks over his registration continue. Should he leave England, United’s payment would be dramatically reduced: FIFA Category I academy compensation is expected to be about £350,000.

  1. United’s scholarship offer now gives the club a compensation route for the upcoming season.
  2. If Gabriel joins another Premier League club, a transfer fee must be agreed or determined by tribunal.
  3. If he opts for an overseas move, United would receive the lower FIFA-set academy compensation instead.
