Marquinhos Seals PSG’s First Ligue 1 Win at Marseille
Paris Saint-Germain ended their winless start in Ligue 1 with a 2-1 victory at Marseille, as Marquinhos struck the late decisive goal before Timothy Weah was dismissed at the Velodrome.
The champions had been held without a league win in their opening three matches, but took maximum points from a tense Classique after surviving Marseille pressure and responding immediately to the home side’s equaliser.
Marquinhos delivers after Marseille reply
Ferran Torres broke the deadlock after the interval, arriving to head Desire Doue’s accurate delivery beyond Marseille goalkeeper Jeffrey de Lange.
Marseille hit back through Angel Gomes, who finished from close range after a quick exchange with Amine Gouiri. Their recovery did not last long. PSG won a corner soon afterwards and, after De Lange made the first save, Marquinhos reacted quickest to force the rebound into the net.
Weah then collected a second yellow card, leaving Marseille with 10 players for the closing stages as PSG protected their one-goal advantage in a hostile stadium.
PSG had also faced danger before the interval, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Neal Maupay both testing the visitors during Marseille’s strongest spell.
Table pressure remains for both clubs
The result is PSG’s second Ligue 1 victory of the season and moves the five-time reigning champions into sixth place. They remain five points behind leaders Monaco.
Marseille’s problems deepened with a fourth loss in five league outings. The club has dropped into the relegation places and has made its poorest start to a campaign since 2011-12.
What happens next
Ligue 1 now pauses for the international break, with the competition returning on October 10.
PSG resume their domestic programme at home to promoted Le Mans on matchday six, aiming to reduce Monaco’s advantage. Marseille travel to Troyes the following day, with the three-week break offering time to reset before a key battle to escape the bottom three.
