Marseille 0-1 Olympiacos: Hezze leaves OM pointless in Europa League
Marseille slipped to a 1-0 Europa League defeat against Olympiacos at the Stade Velodrome, leaving Bruno Genesio’s side without a point after two matches and down in 31st place in the league-phase table.
Hezze strike exposes Marseille’s lack of incision
Santiago Hezze settled the contest three minutes before half-time, finishing after Chiquinho created the opening. Marseille had controlled much of the ball but allowed Olympiacos to find space through the middle at the decisive moment.
The home side finished with 55% possession, 11 attempts and five efforts on target, yet those numbers did not translate into a breakthrough. Olympiacos defended in a compact low block, pushed Marseille towards the flanks and dealt comfortably with the resulting deliveries into the box.
- Marseille held more of the early possession but struggled to play through Olympiacos’ defensive shape.
- Keyliane Abdallah was booked in the 36th minute, limiting his ability to press with full aggression.
- Chiquinho supplied Hezze for the 42nd-minute goal that put the visitors ahead.
- Genesio made a triple alteration in the 62nd minute, introducing Amine Gouiri, Ulisses Garcia and Amine Harit.
- Further changes followed, but Marseille could not turn their territorial pressure into an equaliser.
Changes brought energy, not a clear route to goal
Harit gave Marseille more control between the lines after coming on, demanding possession and adding movement to the attacking phase. Gouiri also injected a more direct threat. Neither, however, could open a defence that stayed organised throughout the second half.
Neal Maupay had been tightly marked by the Olympiacos centre-backs before his 62nd-minute withdrawal, while Igor Paixao was Marseille’s most lively starting forward and tested the goalkeeper twice. His final-third choices were inconsistent, though, with shooting opportunities sometimes taken when a pass was available.
Faris Moumbagna entered in the 75th minute to offer a physical option but saw little meaningful service in the penalty area. Geoffrey Kondogbia came on for the closing 10 minutes, by which point Marseille’s attempts to force the issue were fading.
Defensive transition remains a concern
Jeffrey de Lange made three saves and had little chance against Hezze’s finish, but Marseille will regret the collective failure to protect the central channel before the goal. Nayef Aguerd was composed in possession and solid in his individual duels, although he was part of a defence undone by that lapse.
Bamo Meite endured a difficult night against Olympiacos’ counters and was cautioned in the 77th minute. Emerson was troubled by Gelson Martins’ movement and was replaced after 62 minutes, having been unable to provide the overlapping threat Marseille needed.
In midfield, Tochukwu Nnadi did not establish control before making way in the triple substitution, while Angel Gomes struggled to locate space between Olympiacos’ lines and departed in the 75th minute. Himad Abdelli retained the ball effectively and covered ground, but repeatedly found the half-spaces congested.
- Marseille had the possession and shot advantage but lacked a decisive final pass.
- Olympiacos’ compact defensive block restricted the hosts to wide attacks and manageable crosses.
- Hezze’s 42nd-minute goal was the only major difference in a tight contest.
- Genesio’s attacking substitutions improved the tempo but did not produce a new tactical solution.
- Marseille must now find a sharper attacking response after opening their Europa League campaign with two defeats.
What happens next
Genesio must quickly address Marseille’s inability to break down deep defences. The immediate task is to turn possession into higher-quality chances, with their Europa League position already precarious after two scoreless points from two games.
