Max Dowman scores first senior double as Arsenal beat Ipswich 4-2
Arsenal stayed perfect this season with a 4-2 win at Portman Road, led by 16-year-old Max Dowman’s first senior double.
Dowman struck in the seventh minute after combining with Eberechi Eze, then scored again 90 seconds into the second half. Noni Madueke and captain Mikel Merino completed Arsenal’s scoring as the visitors took control despite 19 changes across the two squads.
Quick facts
- Arsenal won 4-2 away at Ipswich Town.
- Max Dowman scored twice at the age of 16.
- Dowman is the second 16-year-old to score two goals for a Premier League club in any competition.
- Wayne Rooney was the first, doing so for Everton against Wrexham in October 2002.
- Anis Mehmeti and Chuba Akpom scored late for Ipswich.
Dowman’s opening goal came from a sharp one-two with Eze before he produced a solo finish. His second arrived almost immediately after the interval, leaving Ipswich with too much ground to make up.
Mehmeti and Akpom pulled goals back late on, but neither strike changed the outcome. Arsenal’s winning start in every competition remains intact.
Mikel Arteta praised Dowman’s growing influence after full-time, saying the teenager’s combinations and work on the ball were a pleasure to watch. The Arsenal manager added that Dowman is becoming more involved, can maintain his level for longer spells and has exceptional ability.
Merino, wearing the armband, said Dowman has outstanding talent and plays with visible enjoyment. He also stressed that the youngster must continue listening, learning and developing alongside Arsenal’s experienced players.
Dowman’s display, along with a composed outing from 17-year-old centre-back Marli Salmon, gives Arsenal another lift before a demanding run of fixtures.
What happens next: Arsenal will await the outcome of Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup fourth-round draw, which follows Brighton’s meeting with Manchester United.
