Max Dowman Stars With Brace as Arsenal Beat Ipswich in Carabao Cup
Arsenal beat Ipswich Town 4-2 in the Carabao Cup at Portman Road as 16-year-old Dowman marked his first outing of the season with two goals and a defining all-round display.
The reigning Premier League champions were ahead inside seven minutes when the academy product drove beyond Cedric Kipre and placed a low finish into the corner. Dowman struck again soon after the interval, becoming just the second 16-year-old to score twice for a Premier League club after Wayne Rooney’s Everton double in 2002.
His influence went beyond the two finishes. Dowman’s aggressive work without the ball helped force the opening for Noni Madueke to score, while he was also involved in the move that ended with Mikel Merino bending in Arsenal’s fourth.
Arteta urges care over teenage breakthrough
Mikel Arteta praised Dowman’s talent, character and ability to meet the physical demands of senior football, while also highlighting fellow youngster Marli Salmon. The Arsenal manager said the teenager can produce decisive actions naturally and has increasingly shown the stamina and defensive commitment required over a full match.
Arteta believes Dowman’s mentality is central to his progress, describing him as a player who relishes performing on the biggest stage. But he made clear Arsenal will not allow the attention around the 16-year-old to dictate his development.
The manager said players of that age rarely cope with the intensity, physicality and demands of English football, even if Dowman has impressed whenever he has been given an opening. Arsenal’s priority is to select the right moments for him, with the correct preparation and match context.
Dowman will continue to receive first-team opportunities, but Arteta insists the club must protect his long-term growth rather than accelerate it simply because of one outstanding night in Suffolk.
