Chelsea have taken 10 points from their opening six Premier League matches and sit sixth, with Xabi Alonso’s side under pressure to turn a costly rebuild into a push for European qualification.

What we know

  • Chelsea have no European fixtures in 2026-27, making a return to continental competition the minimum target this season.
  • Defensive problems have persisted despite the arrivals of World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez and French centre-back Maxence Lacroix, who cost £52m ($69m).
  • Cole Palmer joined from Manchester City for £40m ($53m) in 2023 and has since won the PFA Young Player of the Year award. Joao Pedro arrived from Brighton in a £60m ($80m) deal in 2025.
  • Morgan Rogers became the most expensive British player ever when Chelsea paid Aston Villa £117m ($156m) for him in summer 2026.
  • Alonso also has Estevao, Geovany Quenda, Jamie Gittens, Danny Welbeck and Emmanuel Emegha among his attacking options, while Reece James and Jordan Henderson add England experience.
  • Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin believes Moises Caicedo is central to fixing the side’s balance, describing the midfielder as the effective extra defender when Chelsea lose possession.

The next step for Alonso

Nevin believes Chelsea’s preferred 3-4-2-1 system leaves the three centre-backs exposed in individual duels. He said the wing-backs must handle both defensive and attacking demands, but argued the back line has not yet met the required level.

Caicedo’s return has improved the shape, Nevin said, because he reads danger, covers space and can drop into the defensive line. James can perform elements of that midfield role, but Caicedo has greater mobility to protect the defence and join attacks.

The immediate concern is fitness. If Caicedo remains available and performs at his best, Chelsea may already possess the answer to their defensive instability. If he is sidelined, Nevin believes the club may need to recruit another experienced centre-half in the next transfer window.
