Monaco to Revisit Erik Lira Deal After Balogun Exit Delay

Monaco remain determined to sign Cruz Azul midfielder Lira after their late summer move collapsed, with the club now expected to revisit the deal when the winter window opens.

The proposed switch to the Stade Louis II was blocked when Monaco could not complete Folarin Balogun’s planned departure to Everton before the deadline. That outgoing deal was needed before the Ligue 1 side could bring in the Mexico international.

Coach Luis has made clear that Lira remains high on his recruitment list despite the failed deadline-day push. “Of course,” he said when asked if Monaco would try again. “I always want great players by my side. It could not happen and he could not come, but I will keep pushing for him in every transfer window.”

The Brazilian has admired the holding midfielder since facing Cruz Azul during his spell in charge of Flamengo. He said Lira had the quality required for European football and recalled taking an unusual tactical step to limit his influence.

“For me, Lira is top, top, top, top, top,” Luis said. “He has the level to play in Europe. In the Flamengo-Cruz Azul game, I put a man-marker on him. I almost never do that.”

Monaco’s perfect opening to the Ligue 1 season has strengthened the need for options in central midfield as the campaign develops. The club will have to manage its squad space and agree a fee with Cruz Azul before any January agreement can be completed.

For now, Lira stays in Liga MX, where he remains vital to Cruz Azul. His form over the coming months could shape Monaco’s next move when the market reopens.
