Gatti’s Stoppage-Time Header Earns Juventus Draw Against AC Milan
Federico Gatti struck deep in stoppage time to earn Juventus a 1-1 draw against AC Milan in Turin, wiping out the Rossoneri’s late lead and ending both clubs’ perfect Serie A starts.
Quick facts
- Juventus 1-1 AC Milan in Turin.
- Substitute Cisse put Milan ahead with a shot through Pierre Kalulu’s legs.
- Gatti levelled with a header from Teun Koopmeiners’ delivery.
- Cisse became the youngest player of the three-points era to score in each of his first two away appearances.
- Milan visit Lazio on Saturday, September 12; Juventus go to Sassuolo a day later.
Milan had spent much of the match under pressure before Cisse struck against the flow of play. His composed finish also ended the club’s Serie A scoring wait against Juventus, which had stood since May 2023.
Juventus kept forcing the issue and finally broke through in added time. Koopmeiners supplied the cross and Gatti powered his header home to ensure neither side left with a 100 per cent league record.
Ruben Amorim admitted Milan had been second best for long spells, saying Juventus “did not deserve to lose”. He felt his side had failed to look after the ball well enough despite periods of first-half control.
The Milan coach said the basics of receiving and moving possession had fallen below the required level. He also pointed to problems after turnovers, with Juventus able to hurt his team in transition.
“When we do not have the ball, we struggle,” Amorim said. He added that Milan defended capably when Juventus committed extra forwards, but suffered when possession was lost and the home side could break.
Amorim insisted there will be no change of playing style, despite describing it as a difficult night for a squad that has only been working together for two months. His immediate task is to improve Milan’s retention and defensive transitions before the trip to Lazio.
Luciano Spalletti’s Juventus, meanwhile, head to Sassuolo on Sunday as they aim to stay among the early Serie A leaders.
