Richarlison has challenged Senator Flavio Bolsonaro over an alleged seizure of the Brazil forward’s private island near Rio de Janeiro, replying “What about my island?” after Bolsonaro dismissed the claims as fake news.

Richarlison alleges island was taken after sale refusal

The Tottenham striker said he lost control of the property after refusing to sell it to Bolsonaro. In videos shared online, Richarlison alleged that political influence and court action were used against him.

  • Richarlison said he put money into the island during 2020 and 2021.
  • He claimed the property was taken within 24 hours by Flavio Bolsonaro and Willer Tomaz.
  • The 29-year-old alleged that no payment was made for the land.
  • He put his unrecovered investment at around 10 million Brazilian reals, estimated at £1.4m or $1.7m.

“I refused to sell the island,” Richarlison said, claiming that the subsequent legal process was used to remove him from the property. He has called for urgent judicial action and said the case exposed a failure within Brazil’s justice system.

Bolsonaro rejects accusation

Bolsonaro responded publicly after the allegations spread online, branding them fake news in the comments of a video posted by Brazilian singer and influencer Juliette.

Juliette had criticised the conduct of the right-wing candidate when Bolsonaro entered the discussion. Richarlison then answered the senator’s denial with a short public demand for answers over the island.

The dispute has broken into Brazil’s wider political debate ahead of the second round of the presidential election on October 25. The political legacy of the elder Bolsonaro remains a major issue in the campaign.

What happens next for the Tottenham forward

Richarlison is seeking legal intervention over the alleged loss of the island while facing an uncertain club situation in north London.

  • He did not secure a transfer away from Tottenham in the summer window.
  • Head coach Roberto De Zerbi has left him outside the first-team picture.
  • Richarlison was omitted from Tottenham’s 25-player Premier League squad for the current campaign.
  • He has instead been playing for the club’s Under-21 team.

The Brazil international’s next steps are expected to centre on his proposed legal challenge, with the public dispute with Bolsonaro continuing during a sensitive election period.
