Ronald Araújo has put any talk of a permanent Liverpool transfer on hold, insisting it is too soon to decide his future despite an encouraging start to his season-long Barcelona loan.

The Uruguay international has been used at centre-back and right-back by Andoni Iraola after arriving from the Spanish champions in one of the summer’s more unexpected moves.

Araújo said he and his family have settled happily on Merseyside, but stressed that his focus is on improving daily and repaying the welcome he has received from Liverpool supporters and staff. He described the scale of the club, its facilities and its fanbase as striking after experiencing it first-hand.

Liverpool’s option to buy will become a major issue later in the campaign, but Araújo made clear there will be no early commitment while he concentrates on playing regularly and developing his game.

Frimpong and Szoboszlai ruled out for Villarreal

Iraola will be without Frimpong and Szoboszlai for Tuesday’s Champions League fixture after both were forced off during the 2-1 Premier League win over Brentford.

Frimpong’s problem is the more serious concern. Iraola said the Dutch defender sustained a significant new injury within the opening minutes of his appearance and is unlikely to return before the next international break, although the club will monitor his recovery.

Szoboszlai has not suffered a fresh setback, with Iraola indicating the midfielder remains at roughly the same stage as last week. Liverpool must be more cautious, however, after the Hungary international pushed to be available for the demanding Brentford match despite the physical nature of the contest.

Iraola faces close friend Pérez

The Villarreal game carries an added personal edge for Iraola, whose opposite number Iñigo Pérez was his assistant at Rayo Vallecano. The pair first knew each other in Athletic Club’s academy before later sharing a dressing room in the first team.

When Pérez ended his playing career, Iraola brought him into his coaching staff at Rayo. Pérez had been expected to follow Iraola to Bournemouth in 2023, but work-permit problems stopped that move.

Iraola said the two know each other extremely well and normally speak frequently about football and family. Contact has reduced as their European meeting has approached, with the Liverpool coach admitting it is unusual to prepare against a friend whose tactical ideas he understands so closely.

Liverpool have made a perfect start in this season’s Champions League and will aim for a third consecutive victory against Pérez’s Villarreal.
