Napoli had held Inter scoreless through the opening half before Matteo Politano and Rasmus Hojlund put the visitors 2-0 ahead in quick succession after the restart.
Inter responded immediately. Martinez pulled one back in the 56th minute, before Marcus Thuram headed in the leveller. With the home side continuing to force the issue, Martinez delivered the decisive finish in stoppage time.
The Argentine captain then climbed over the advertising boards to celebrate with Inter’s supporters. Thuram followed him onto the ledge despite previously being unwilling to join in.
“Marcus came with me today,” Martinez said. “He always says I’m mad when I climb up there because he never wants to, but he did it this time.”
Martinez said Inter’s growing sharpness helped drive the recovery. “We are getting back to full fitness little by little with more minutes on the pitch,” he said. “We went behind and found a way to come back, which may have been something we lacked last season.”
His brace moved him ahead in Inter’s record books. Only Benito Lorenzi, with 138 Serie A goals for the club, and Giuseppe Meazza, on 197, remain above Martinez in the Nerazzurri’s league scoring rankings.
The forward also spoke about Lionel Messi’s international retirement, revealing he had contacted his Argentina colleague.
“I sent him a message,” Martinez said. “Everything I lived through alongside him will remain with me forever. He has given me so much.”
What happens next: Cristian Chivu’s Inter remain top after winning all three league matches so far, with domestic and European commitments now set to test the early pace-setters.
