Mortal Shell 2 PS5 Premium Preorders Oversubscribed

Sony is moving toward ending disc production for PlayStation games in 2028, but physical releases are still very much in motion for the rest of this era. One upcoming title that’s already hitting a snag for PS5 collectors is Mortal Shell 2, specifically the premium physical run—preorders for a key version have reportedly been oversubscribed ahead of launch.

Cold Symmetry, the developer, and Playstack, the publisher, shared the issue on July 16 via X. They said demand for Mortal Shell 2’s physical PlayStation 5 edition “exceeded expectations,” and that retailers no longer have unreserved stock to allocate.

In a statement aimed at players who were planning to secure the preorder, Cold Symmetry apologized and explained that the Revered Edition is no longer available in some territories. The reason given was tied to the game’s August 20 release date and the production window needed to restock physical units.

They were clear that there’s no promise of a post-launch replenishment plan, since the final decision isn’t within the studio’s control.

This availability problem is specifically tied to Mortal Shell 2’s $70 Revered Edition on PS5. That premium package includes bonus items beyond the game itself, including a collector-style tuck-in box, a steelbook case, fine art prints, and a physical artbook.

Cold Symmetry’s comments align with what players may be seeing at major retailers: the Revered Edition is listed as “coming soon” or marked unavailable, depending on store and region. If you’re still interested in owning a physical copy, the standard PS5 version can still be prepaid for $50, but it won’t include the additional extras from the Revered Edition.

Mortal Shell 2 is a standalone sequel to Cold Symmetry’s 2020 Mortal Shell. It keeps the “souls-like” identity while leaning into a distinctive mechanic: players equip their character with “shells” that reshape how they play and also alter combat interactions.

The full game arrives on August 20. Before that, there’s an open beta (functioning as a demo) available on Steam right now. Completing the beta is said to unlock a bloody Flayed Harbinger skin, along with the ability to skip the prologue when the complete game launches.
