Tottenham winger Mykhailo Mudryk is expected to miss matches until at least October after sustaining an ankle injury in training, dealing another setback to a player who had only just returned to competitive football.

Head coach Roberto De Zerbi described the problem as a “stupid injury” and said Spurs want the Ukrainian back quickly. Mudryk had endured a long spell away before making his comeback in Saturday’s goalless draw at Nottingham Forest.

Quick facts

  • Mudryk has suffered an ankle injury in training.
  • The Chelsea loanee is not expected back before October at the earliest.
  • He played 15 minutes against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
  • That appearance was his first competitive outing in 22 months.
  • Tottenham are still seeking their first Premier League win and goal.

Mudryk’s Forest cameo followed his suspension after an adverse finding for the banned substance meldonium in 2024. De Zerbi felt the 15-minute appearance showed encouraging signs, while stressing that the winger’s rhythm will need time after such a long absence.

“He has suffered too much,” De Zerbi said, adding that Tottenham had lost an important option. “He played well in Nottingham, but it is normal when a player has not played for a long time.”

The injury arrives as Spurs continue to search for a breakthrough in the Premier League. Despite significant summer recruitment and major changes in the squad, De Zerbi’s side have yet to score or record a victory.

De Zerbi, however, insists he sees progress from the injury-hit group he inherited from the end of last season. He said Tottenham are stronger than they were then and remains convinced by the quality and potential within his squad.

What happens next: Tottenham must manage without Mudryk for the coming weeks, with October currently the earliest possible target for his return.
