Trabzonspor held firm for a 4-2 Conference League win over KuPS after Onana recovered from a costly corner-kick error by saving a penalty.

The Turkish side had raced into a 3-0 advantage, but Petteri Pennanen’s 54th-minute inswinging corner flew untouched through the box and dropped inside the far post. Onana was beaten by the delivery and left on the ground as KuPS found a route back into the match.

Quick facts

  • Trabzonspor won 4-2 against Finnish club KuPS.
  • Paul Onuachu started the scoring for the home side.
  • Mohamed Salah made it 2-0 with his eighth goal since his summer move to Turkey.
  • Franculino Dju scored twice, including a stoppage-time finish.
  • Onana saved a penalty after KuPS had cut the deficit from a corner.

KuPS had an immediate chance to turn the game into a genuine comeback when they won a penalty soon after the unusual goal. Onana dived right to keep out the spot-kick, and the follow-up was fired over the bar.

That stop protected Trabzonspor’s two-goal margin after Franculino Dju had made it 3-0 early in the second half. The hosts then regained control and Dju struck again in added time.

Former Southampton forward Onuachu had put Trabzonspor ahead, before ex-Liverpool winger Salah curled a finish into the far corner. KuPS forward Gustav Engvall scored late, but it did not alter the outcome.

Onana, in his second campaign away from Manchester United, will take encouragement from the penalty save despite the mistake from Pennanen’s delivery. Regular European action remains central to his attempt to regain consistency during the loan.

Trabzonspor next need to pair their attacking edge with tighter defending as they pursue further Conference League progress.
