Philippe Coutinho Unveiled as Santos’ New No. 11 After Vasco Exit
Philippe Coutinho has been unveiled as Santos’ new number 11 and could make his first appearance for the club against Atletico Mineiro in the Copa Sudamericana on Wednesday night.
Coutinho handed Santos shirt after Vasco exit
Santos presented the experienced midfielder on Monday, adding him to a group of recent arrivals that includes Arthur, Rodinei, Lima and Everton Cebolinha.
Coutinho’s switch has caused a fierce backlash from Vasco da Gama supporters. The former Brazil international returned to his boyhood club on loan from Aston Villa in July 2024, then completed a permanent move 12 months later. His February departure before joining a Brazilian rival has been viewed by some fans as a betrayal.
At his Santos presentation, Coutinho insisted his connection with Vasco remains intact and said he had made major financial sacrifices to return there.
- He said Vasco had always been his home after coming through the club’s academy and reaching the first team.
- When the chance to return arose, he said he still had one year left on a contract in Qatar worth $10 million net.
- He also had a year remaining on his Aston Villa deal.
- Coutinho said his condition for returning was that Vasco would not pay a transfer fee.
- To make that possible, he said he gave up a year’s wages as well as money owed to him by Aston Villa.
Midfielder says health forced hardest decision
Coutinho said the end of his second Vasco spell became psychologically overwhelming after the club’s Copa do Brasil final defeat and mounting hostility at Estadio Sao Januario.
He had hoped to win silverware with Vasco after collecting trophies abroad, believing a title could have strengthened his status at the club. Instead, the defeat in the cup final hit him hard, while poor home results at the start of the new year brought angry reactions from the stands.
The 34-year-old rejected suggestions that he had reacted only to isolated criticism, saying the stadium had turned against him and repeatedly demanded his departure.
“I had reached my limit,” Coutinho said. “In that condition, I would not have been able to offer anything. I had to be honest with myself and put my health first.”
He stressed that he understood the consequences of leaving but denied abandoning Vasco, saying the decision was the most difficult of his career.
What happens next for Santos
Santos are 10th in the league and want Coutinho to provide a lift in their domestic campaign as well as their continental schedule.
