Ramos struck the decisive goal in the 79th minute, converting after Joao Felix created the opening. The forward had led the attack in Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence and repeatedly stretched Norway’s centre-backs with his movement.
Portugal had been forced to recover from an early setback. Norway broke through in the 36th minute when Ajer headed in Martin Odegaard’s delivery. The Portuguese marking at the set piece left their goalkeeper with little chance.
The response was immediate. Nuno Mendes drove the hosts forward from the left and supplied Cancelo, who levelled two minutes later. Cancelo had already been booked in the 12th minute but remained an attacking influence before making way shortly after the hour mark.
Portugal took control after the interval, limiting Norway to three attempts on target while dominating the ball. Ruben Dias handled the demanding task of containing Erling Haaland for most of the match, with Norway’s main striker withdrawn before the end. Portugal’s defence made 12 clearances, although Ajer’s goal exposed a moment of uncertainty at a dead-ball situation.
In midfield, Portugal’s defensive screen disrupted Norwegian attacks before Ruben Neves was introduced in the 63rd minute to add passing quality against the deep block. Portugal’s midfield control helped them build 58% possession, while the side’s technical play produced 499 completed passes.
The closing stages brought avoidable trouble. Conceicao was shown two yellow cards in quick succession in the 86th minute, forcing Portugal into a defensive reshuffle. Bruno Fernandes, who had driven Portugal’s search for a breakthrough despite no direct goal involvement, was also booked in the 88th minute.
Diogo Dalot had replaced Cancelo in the 62nd minute and brought extra defensive balance on the right. Neves helped Portugal manage the final quarter, while further late changes in the 86th minute, stoppage time and the final seconds were used to retain the ball, run down the clock and reinforce the defence.
Portugal survived Norway’s late push to secure the points, but Conceicao’s dismissal will be a concern after a performance in which Jorge Jesus’ selection of Ramos and reactive substitutions proved decisive.
