PSG Begin Champions League Title Defence Against Bratislava Under Pressure
Paris Saint-Germain will begin their Champions League league-phase title defence at home to Yaya Toure’s Bratislava on Wednesday, with Luis Enrique demanding full focus despite his side’s difficult domestic start.
PSG arrive at the Parc des Princes as consecutive European champions after beating Arsenal on penalties in last season’s final. But the French club are still searching for their first Ligue 1 win of the 2026-27 campaign after three matches.
The Champions League opener offers Enrique’s squad an immediate chance to reset, although the PSG coach has warned against treating the Slovak visitors as a straightforward assignment.
“It is the most difficult competition,” Enrique said. “How many teams are capable of winning it? Five, six, eight? The margins are very small. We want to start very well.
“It may look like an easy game, but there are no easy games. We must remain concentrated.”
Enrique’s standards remain uncompromising
PSG captain Marquinhos has underlined the intensity of Enrique’s selection demands, saying players must earn their place through their work on the training pitch.
“He is not only taking difficult decisions this season,” the Brazilian defender said. “He has his own management method. To deserve a place, the group must give 100% in training. That is what he asks for.
“Players have to push themselves every day. Everybody must work to earn a place in the group. At times, players are not selected. It hurts, but everyone understands. That is football.
“He has managed very well until now and it has worked. He has a philosophy and he does not hesitate to make hard decisions when they are needed.”

Enrique takes PSG into Wednesday’s match with the strongest Champions League managerial win percentage among coaches to have taken charge of at least 50 games in the competition, at 63 per cent.
History also points in PSG’s favour. No reigning European champion has lost their first continental fixture at home since 1967, across the past 35 sides to begin their defence on home soil.
A convincing opening result would lift confidence before a demanding autumn run, while also giving PSG momentum to end their early Ligue 1 winless sequence.
