Paris Saint-Germain held off Manchester City 4-2 at the Etihad after building a decisive three-goal lead inside 32 minutes, with Erling Haaland’s second-half double unable to complete the comeback.

Désiré Doué, Ousmane Dembélé and Vitinha struck during a ruthless opening spell as PSG punished the space behind City’s aggressive defensive line. The visitors had only 46% of the ball before the break but repeatedly escaped the press and attacked directly through the channels.

Who was affected

  • Manchester City’s Enzo Maresca replaced Rúben Dias, Rayan Cherki and Jérémy Doku at half-time, sending on Matheus Nunes, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Iliman Ndiaye.
  • Ndiaye’s direct running helped create Haaland’s first goal in the 53rd minute as City moved away from their slower possession game.
  • Haaland scored again in the 75th minute to cut the gap to 4-2, but City could not find another breakthrough despite registering 27 attempts.
  • PSG introduced Khvicha Kvaratskhelia for Doué in the 66th minute, while João Neves added control in midfield.
  • Lucas Hernandez and Lucas Beraldo arrived late as Luis Enrique’s side protected the lead in a deeper five-man defence.

How PSG broke City’s press

City began in a 4-2-3-1, with Enzo Fernández and Elliot Anderson operating at the base of midfield and Cherki behind Haaland. Their shape became a 3-2-5 during build-up, with Joško Gvardiol moving inside, but the commitment of players forward left Dias and Marc Guéhi exposed when possession changed hands.

PSG used a flexible 4-3-3 and were prepared to play through goalkeeper Safonov to draw City’s front line forward. Once that first pressure was beaten, Warren Zaïre-Emery, Fabián Ruiz and Vitinha looked forward quickly, releasing Dembélé and Doué into the open ground.

Maghnes Akliouche’s movement into inside channels also pulled Guéhi away from his position and created room for PSG’s wide attackers. Dembélé stayed high on the flank, preventing City’s full-backs from joining attacks without leaving a clear route for a counter.

  1. City controlled 54% possession in the first half but struggled to feed Cherki centrally or bring Haaland into play.
  2. PSG defended in a compact 4-5-1 without the ball, with Vitinha and Ruiz screening the back line and closing passing lanes.
  3. Doué, Dembélé and Vitinha established a 3-0 advantage by the 32nd minute as City were caught repeatedly in transition.
  4. Maresca’s interval changes gave City greater momentum and Haaland scored in the 53rd minute.
  5. After Haaland made it 4-2 in the 75th minute, PSG closed ranks and saw out the result.

What happens next

City will need to assess the defensive imbalance exposed by PSG’s counter-attacks, particularly with their high press and advanced full-back positioning leaving large spaces behind the midfield. PSG, meanwhile, move on after demonstrating they can absorb pressure, strike quickly and protect a lead against sustained late attacking pressure.
